The Olympics are a celebration of the athletic spirit, competition, and world unity. It is these things that draw spectators from around the world to the Olympics, creating an international festival of sport and pride. People from all parts of the globe bring their excitement, their flag, their culture, and– their germs

Although the Olympic venue becomes a melting pot of all things good in the world, it can also become a melting pot of potential illnesses.  A simple way to protect yourself from potential illnesses, both abroad and at home, is to get vaccinated. Thanks to those dedicated individuals that have spent their lives looking for a “cure”, once deadly illnesses are now an afterthought. Vaccines exist for many ailments and most have no notable side effects. With the school year rapidly approaching, now is a great time to get vaccinated to help keep your family healthy during the first few weeks of school.

Many organizations sponsor free vaccinations throughout the year, with most occurring at the beginning of the school year and in the autumn months (before the “cold and flu” season). These free vaccinations are common at local health fairs, schools, clinics, and grocery stores, so keep-an-eye-out for any in your area. However, vaccines are not for everyone, so be sure to check with your physician first to see what, if any, vaccines are recommended based on your lifestyle.

  Kudos, Cindy Hartig! Fitness: Goal-Setting
Smiley Face

Congratulations to Cindy Hartig!  She has been selected as August’s Kudos! award recipient. Cindy is a 3 year member of the Kissimmee Civic Center.

KCC:   How long have you been physically active and involved in fitness?

Hartig:  All my life.

KCC:  What have you noticed about the benefits of exercise in your life?

Hartig:  It makes you look and feel good and as you get older it keeps your metabolic rate where it should be. Especially as a woman, I don't want to gain those pounds that you hear about.

KCC:  What are your favorite Group Exercise programs?

Hartig:   Step class or anything else where you sweat!!

KCC:  What are your hobbies?

Hartig:   Swimming, shooting, and mowing the lawn.

KCC:  The Olympics start this month...what is your favorite event  to watch?

Hartig:   Track & Field.

KCC:  Which Olympic event would you most want to compete in?

Hartig: The mile run- Because I can do it! It’s a challenge and you see immediate results.

KCC:  Any other fun info about Cindy?

Hartig:  I love spicy food! If you don't have blisters on your mouth after you eat, it was not any good. I put whole and ground up flax seed on all meals– it keeps the metabolic rate where it should be and helps with aging.  I enjoy life and love to work out with my daughter, Summer. She keeps all of us pushing it to the max. I love to skate– ice– and in-line.

An extra month has been added-on to Cindy’s membership for being selected as this month's Kudos! award recipient.

If you would like to nominate someone for the Kudos! award, please let us know!

As the Olympics begin in Beijing, the attention of billions of people around the world will be focused on the athletes that have spent so much time training to reach their goal of representing their country, even if it is only for a few seconds.  But ask any of those athletes if the effort was worth it, and their answer would be a resounding “yes!”.  Although most of us will not compete at such an elite level, it is still very important to set fitness goals.  By setting both long-term and short-term  goals, you are better able to stay motivated and focused. The key to using goal-setting as an effective tool for being successful is to select the appropriate difficulty level. It is important to set goals that are difficult enough to make you have to push yourself, but not so unattainable that you can not have measurable success. Setting, and reaching, several short-term goals is a great way to achieve one long-term goal. If you are unsure on what goals you should be working towards, or are unsure on the specific “numbers”, speak with one of our friendly Fitness Specialists and they will be glad to help you!
